My question now is specifically whether you can play the game with 4 or 5 or even more together. (No matter whether with each other or against each other) In a tournament e.g. Would it be cool if you can play with friends & the remaining slots are filled by NPCs.

You can only play it in pairs. You would have to pass the controllers around to each other.
