I know the subject is actually old. But I only found out now that the New 3DS has 2 different display types.
I don't have a second 3D to compare and I don't want to break my Nintendo for data readout with homebrew. Maybe someone who knows their stuff and has a good eye for it can tell me whether I have IPS / TN.
My guess was actually IPS above, TN below. Can someone confirm that? 😉
You can't tell 100% from a photo. So you can take a test (the name slipped away from me). Just tilt the system sharply to one side. If you can still see the picture, you have an IPS screen. If the picture is mainly obscured by the backlight, you have the TN screen.
That's exactly what I tried (see second picture in standby). On the upper screen, the picture remains relatively normal and you can read text as normal. The lower one is very blurry, the writing is illegible and generally much more milky. So I thought IPS above / TN below.
By the way, the model number is QEH100 - I read that this should be mostly IPS / TN
*first picture. The black tones of the two screens do not look the same either, it looks stronger at the top. But I don't know if that is because there's touch below.
Then it's IPS, the touchpad is always VA when the screen is IPS.
