I suspect the metal spring inside has permanently deformed so that the joystick can't return to its original position.

The controller is not necessarily obsolete. On YouTube there are enough tutorials that show the exchange process and thus you can save money. Only by investing a few euro for a spring can one bypass a new purchase. The same is true of the joystick, which can also be exchanged.
