You know there are avatars on Playstation that are provided by Playstation and profile pictures to insert photos yourself. And as you also know, the profile pictures are only visible to close friends. You can do this via PC or Playstation app, choose your profile and there you can choose and add an image instead of an avatar
In some games you can see the profile picture instead of the avatar if you have added the other as a close friend. There's no other possibility, except when a game provides something of its own.
