Why are there no planes in GTA 5?

I have been playing GTA 5 Online on Ps4 in a solo session for a day and wanted to fly with an airplane, but there are none at the known helicopter sites and there are none at the airports. Do I have to have a higher level first or have I done something wrong?

There are planes. I most likely the servers are buggy.

As far as I know, large passenger planes only exist in story mode. If you play online, you will always find private jets at the airport entrance. Right on the big hangar.
