A column is like a party in e.g. Minecraft. You are in the same game / on the same server. In order to be able to play online on XBox, I think XBox Live Gold is needed.
Yes, we both have gold but you can see each other even if you drive around freely in a column
Yes. You do that, you just have to search / teleport yourself. There are even common goals etc.

You just have to click on your XBox friend list, then on your friend and on "invite to party" or "invite to play" as far as I know.

This is done via the "Horizon Life" tab

Connect to "Horizon Life servers". If he wants to go to you he has to press the XBox friends menu, your name and then "join player party" or something like that
