You need a subscription to Xbox to play online, is the game pass included there or do you have to buy the game pass separately?

There are 2 options:

Either you get the Xbox Gamepass, in which you can play all games from the Gamepass AND play online, or you get Xbox Live Gold, which only includes the multiplayer function.
There are also Games with Gold and Deals with Gold.
