Xbox gamertag change for free because of the new update?

Hi you can now change your gamertag on Xbox once can you change it every few months or only once?

I have never used this myself, but as far as I know, there's only one free change option. You can change it constantly, however, this has cost money in the past. I don't know if this is still the case.

However, I also see no need to constantly change my gamertag. I have had mine on all possible systems since 2004. It is a personal name with which one identifies and I would be reluctant to change it.
