You can quickly find new players / friends while playing Mariokart. You can easily add these under the function "Players with whom you last played".
If you are more of the Animal Crossing type, you can make friends by installing the Dodo Code Exchange App (https://www.appsdodos.com/) and inviting them to your island with your created and uploaded Dodo Code.
