Unlock level in Mario Bros?

So I have an important question. I used to play Nintendo Ds, especially with others. (Mario Bros, Mario Kart and so on) Recently, both me and my brother have both d ns and the first or older version of Mario Kart. If I'm playing alone I already have 4 worlds or cups whatever you call that. But when I play with my brother in multiplayer (Versus) games, there are only the 2 standard cups. This is annoying because we always have to play the same level again and again. I'm trying to get more levels in Grand Prix mode all the time. But no matter what I do, it does not work. Do you have tips there? I'm really helpless. If it matters, we only own the game once and connect like that. Does anyone know? How can I get more levels?

I'm not sure but it may be that you first have to win a Gold Cup at the respective cups. And I think you have to win them in the 50 cc, 100cc and 150cc speeds.
