Soundbar, TV and PlayStation?

I recently got myself a soundbar. The sound compared to normal TV speakers is really nice.

At the moment my soundbar is connected to the television via an HDMI cable (HDMI ARC). My PlayStation is connected directly to the TV via an HDMI cable.

Now I've read on the Internet that you should connect the PlayStation to the soundbar and the soundbar to the television. That the sound comes directly to the soundbar, so to speak, and the image is passed on to the television.
Is that how it works? And if so, is there "deterioration" in the picture that arrives on the television, since it is "passed on"? What is the best connection to get optional sound and an optimal picture?

If the soundbar has an HDMI input then it works like this, but the sound and picture result will not change noticeably
