Does the PS5 use fake ray tracing?

Ar

What is fake ray tracing? So either there's ray tracing or not. Which variant is used is another question, none is fake.

There are simplified versions, or old ones, or complex ones, e.g. Those that calculate the ray tracing from the light source, or other (current) ones that calculate the ray tracing from the viewer, etc. In the end they differ only in performance, less from Optics (or if only in details that you really have to look for).

The PS5 can theoretically "use" any technology with its current hardware. Now it still depends on the games whether they are made for them.

Ke

Yes it does.

To be precise, it does not use hardware-accelerated real-time ray tracing or hardware-accelerated DirectX ray tracing.

It uses, so to speak, calculated ray tracing effects, the technology itself apparently not. This was noticeable, for example, in the Spider-Man Remaster and Spider Man Miles Morales.

The difference here is that the console does not use it directly via the technology, but recalculates it and thus simulates it. This technique was still widely used in the Last Gen for more realistic results. However, ray tracing is worlds more accurate, more intelligent and faster.

Au

So, first of all, thank you.

But does it also have real ray tracing?

Ke

Well

DirectX ray tracing from AMD is only available on Xbox consoles and with AMD graphics cards.

Since Sony is going its own way as always, it appears they are using their own type of ray tracing this year. It should be clear that this will not be as unusual as that of AMD or Nvidia. So far, however, as far as I know, only sinister ray tracing has been seen

Au

Well, real ray tracing is used in SM Miles morales (gives a setting for it)

Ke

Unfortunately, that's wrong.

As Digital Foundry has revealed, Spiderman Miles Morales' ray tracing involves sinult ray tracing effects.

Just because the setting is there doesn't mean it's real hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a long time
