How to ride a beast in Far Cry Primal?

I have had Far cry primal for a relatively short time and now I have a brown bear, actually you can ride it, but I can only stroke it. Do I still need a certain skill or a certain progress in the missions? Because that would be pretty stupid if I already had the opportunity to tame them.
