Hi, I'm currently playing Minecraft with my sister and a streamer (https://www.twitch.tv/seberus_ice_dragneel). Then I wanted to get into the Nether and then asked myself why you are not simply teleported directly like in creative mode and do not have to wait.

Because the developers wanted it to look more magical, with the sound and the screen blurring.
Making a nether portal was a huge achievement in the past, so you wanted to make the whole thing a bit cooler graphically.

In Classic they were always made of gold, but they were different xD
Why this is so has already been answered by another comment, but from 1.16 (major Nether update) you can use a portal from the second time (so if Nether and Overworld have already been created) with only a very short "joining world" Go through the portal.
