Minecraft online with friends on Xbox Java edition?

My friend has downloaded the Java edition on his computer and is playing on Xbox - me too and now we want to play together but I don't know how on java.

So he has java on pc and you play on xbox (which means that you have to have the berdrock edition) that would mean no only if he has the bedrock edition on pc or has mc on xbox

So if you both have the Java version (which usually doesn't work on the console) you would have to rent a server. There are also a few free ones (e.g. Aternos or MC4U), just google them. If your friend is playing on the Java version and you are on the console version (also called the bedrock version), you can't play together.

But he has Xbox and it says Minecraft launcher and I have Xbox everything on pc and he could add me too

Please check both in the main menu whether you have "Java Edition" under Minecraft.

If you both have the Java Edition (The Original), you need a server or you have to play in Open-To-LAN. Port forwarding is required for this.

If you don't have a Java Edition, you have the Bedrock Edition.

If one of you has the Java and the other has the Bedrock Edition, one of you bought the wrong version, these versions can't play together.
