If the games cost more than the subscription, it is recommended.
If you're willing to pay 9.99 euro every month, it's definitely worth it.
Not only that you can play Microsoft Exclusive like Gears of War 4 or Forza Horizon 4 from the beginning without limit, there are also various Triple A games from other publishers such as Monster Hunter World, Wolfenstein II or Just Cause 4 currently available.
