I have an Xbox but still no controller should I buy an Xbox controller or are there controllers that are cheaper where vl because if a PS4 controller that would work too
The Ps4 controller also works, but only flawlessly on Steam. For example, if you want to play the new flight simulator, you have to configure it by hand.
Overall, I'd rather recommend the Xbox One controller.

You can buy an adapter (more expensive than a controller) to use your PS4 adapter
You can also use third party Xbox controllers, but they will usually not be as well made as the originals
All Playstation controllers are NOT compatible with an Xbox One or higher!
I would therefore recommend you to buy an Xbox controller in addition, this is compatible with every platform except the Playstation and is the better choice from an ergonomic point of view.
