As on the Playstation, you also need a paid membership to use the online service.
Xbox live Gold costs 6.99 euro per month, but Microsoft itself offers a 3 or 6 month discount. In online retail there are also prepaid cards for up to a year, often a little cheaper.
There are also prepaid cards with a limited duration in stores, since Xbox live is otherwise a subscription.
If you are ready, I personally recommend the Gamepass Ultimate. In addition to the gold membership, you have all the games (over 300) of the Gamepass available including EAplay and streaming via Android for 12.99 euro.
