I bought an XBox One controller and a micro USB cable that was meant for the controller. Now I ask myself why it just doesn't fit? Do I have the wrong cable after all?

You bought the cable to charge, right? If you connect the cable to the controller and the USB port on the console, it works.
Are you sure you bought an Xbox One controller and not maybe one of the new ones? The Xbox Series X controllers have USB-C.
