Yes, just insert the Xbox 360 CD into Xbox One. Works without any problems since, as you said, it's backwards compatible. 360 and One players play on the same servers. So yes, one and 360 players can play together. And yes, the multiplayer game progress is still there if you still use the same account from back then. Mine were still there at the time (it used to play on the 360). So everything is unchanged.
I've been playing Call of Duty Black Ops 2 on Xbox One for 2 years. So it has been backward compatible for a long time.
