You need an Xbox Live account for the Bedrock version of Minecraft (and unfortunately soon for Java too). Question: What for? Why can't you get a Microsoft account right away, and why Xbox Live? I'm sure some people think you have to buy an Xbox to do it, which they don't.

Because Microsoft wants control over all of their products. They want you to have the same username there as with all other MS. You also want more control over the server!

The Xbox Live account is also the Microsoft account.
Xbox Live Account = Microsoft Account.
If you do it right, you are using a single email address and both accounts are virtually linked. Xbox Live and the Microsoft service are only kept separate, because Xbox Live is responsible for gaming and the Microsoft accounts are responsible for products such as Microsoft 365.
