On the one hand, you should know inside yourself why you were banned, be it insult, cheating, inappropriate gamertag etc.
You will normally receive a message from Microsoft explaining your behavior and ask you, for example, to change your gamertag if it is not appropriate. If you follow their instructions, the account will be unlocked again after a certain time.
It is highly unlikely that your account will be unlocked again by yourself because usually a push of a button from Microsoft has to go.
Accordingly, it could also be that someone else tried to access your account or that the password was entered incorrectly too often.
