Does that mean I can assume that if I want to meet friends with online mode, I can't do it without this membership? That would be really stupid. In this respect, the 3DS would be much better, wouldn't it?
It's cheeky when you consider that I don't want to play regularly, but only once in a while and when I play 2 years later and no longer have this membership, but I do. Want to play online that doesn't work.

Yes, as with xBox and Playstation, this membership is mandatory for multiplay. Only relatively cheap at Nintendo.
Yes, to play online with other players you need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription (20 euro / year). Things like updates and news can also be obtained without a subscription, and free titles such as Fortnite are also excluded from the subscription model. Local multiplayer is also possible without an NSO.
In addition to being able to play online with others, NSO offers a small range of other advantages:
- Free access to a collection of NES and SNES games.
- You can play the standard game mode in Tetris 99 for free.
- Saved files can be saved in a cloud. This basically applies to all games, but there are some (mostly unnecessary) exceptions.
- You can use the Nintendo Switch online app, which offers some nice features for selected games.
- There are a few offers that are exclusive to NSO users.
Nintendo has completely failed when it comes to online (and that's what a die-hard Nintendo fan tells you). Totally unreliable online servers that feel like Russian roulette. If you are lucky you can gamble calmly and then fly out not because of your internet but because of the lousy servers for which money is also required.
So it is not an exaggeration Server costs money. In contrast to Xbox at 60, 20 euro is nothing. Especially since I have no problems with the Internet, in contrast to many others, everything works perfectly.
