Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch - How can you save the game status?

How can you save the game status of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if you want to e.g. Drive the 48 race mode against each other?

You don't have to save a game, do you? Just select the mode and play.

The game saves automatically after the completion of a race or a cup / series of races.

Unfortunately, if you want to save in the middle of a series of races in order to continue from there later, that is not possible. You can only pause the game and continue playing later. Then of course you can't play anything else in between.
