Sega was the biggest competitor to Nintendo in the 90s and dueled against the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, especially with the Sega Mega Drive, until Sega left the console market in 2001.
What was your favorite Sega game console? And did you grow up with Sega or did you only experience the games and consoles afterwards?
My first console
Was Sonic the Hedgehog your first game or another? π
Among other things, I think Tetris or something was there too.
Mega Drive, Saturn and Dreamcast are all three in first place for me when it comes to Sega consoles
So you can't make up your mind so well π
How nice it is to find gamers here who, like most today, don't seem to have forgotten that Sega as a console manufacturer was once the only and also successful competitor to Nintendo.
My gaming history began in 1989 with the NES, but then I switched to Sega with the Mega Drive. Back then they were just felt cooler and more grown-up, I'll just say Mortal Kombat.
This was followed by Saturn where I had my first contact with the Tomb Raider and Resident Evil series and to this day I rave about Panzer Dragoon Saga.
Then comes the Dreamcast which is not only the best Sega console for me today but the best of its time.
Why? To do this, I'll copy another answer from me.
When it appeared well before the Playstation 2, it was the most technically impressive console and way ahead of its time. I don't even know where to start. The console was certainly so extraordinary and formative not only for me but for everyone who knew and appreciated it at the time.
Sorry will be a longer text, but maybe some of you will learn something about a wrongly misunderstood and unsuccessful console which, by the way, also sealed the end of Sega's console ambitions.
On the one hand, the technology. Games like Sonic Adventure, Sega Rally, Soul Calibur, Death or Alive, Shen Mue, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5, Jet Set Radio, Quake III Arena, Resident Evil Code Veronika - all titles and series that are sure to be known by many today Appear so incredibly good. In contrast to Playstation 1 or Sega Saturn, this was the first time that fully modeled and super textured 3D graphics were available. In addition, everything is super fluid and lightning fast.
You also have to know that there was a big slot machine scene in Japan and the USA at that time. Many titles have also been ported to their predecessors, but only now did they not only look as good as in the arcade but sometimes better. I can hardly describe what a graphic flash and immense leap in terms of technology it was back then. Even after the Playstation 2 appeared, which was difficult to program until the end, the same games often looked better on Sega's console.
The collaboration with Microsoft is interesting here. The console ran with a Windows CE operating system and thus PC games were easier to port.
In addition, the Dreamcast was the first time you could play properly online with a console. Even some of them can no longer imagine that today, it has become so commonplace in the age of smartphones. The console had a modem built in from the factory. In mine there was a 33k modem and in times when you still logged into the Internet via the telephone line with a dial-in number, where bills were billed every minute, which is why you were constantly looking for the cheapest telephone provider, that was also a supposed killer feature. The first game back then was Chu Chu Rocket and Sega even sent it for free, as well as a keyboard for chatting. There was still a slight delay between input and execution, but that didn't detract from the fun.
After that, Sega really turned it up with Phantasy Star Online. The first time you could meet in an online MMO in a lobby / upper world / hub and play quests together after forming groups. That ran smoothly in the meantime and I still remember how we often just chatted for hours instead of playing games, voice chat was out of the question. Quake III Arena was just as awesome and ran absolutely smoothly with 6 players.
There was also a lot of hardware that was something special back then. The controller had an analog stick and there was also a rumble module to buy. This was plugged into one of the two slots on the controller. Also normal today but something extraordinary back then. The topic special, also the memory card, for the younger ones, consoles didn't have hard drives at that time but external memory modules, was extraordinary. This was because it had its own display and showed additional information on the controller while playing. If you pulled it out you could even play with it because it had two buttons and a digipad. Unfortunately, only a few games support this interesting feature, and even fewer did it sensibly.
There was also an angel controller, light gun (House of the Death!) Or mouse and what I find particularly worth mentioning was a microphone, which
Yes, that's why the three of them are up immediately, all three have games that I still gamble today, which are great fun
I see you like the Sega Dreamcast pretty much π
I recently got a Sega Dreamcast on eBay along with Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 π
Yes, of course, back then it was a real revolution compared to Saturn and Playstation.
Sega Adventure was my first game for the Dreamcast back then with Sega Rally. Absolutely brilliant, a real graphic flash. At the VMU the bred Chaos could be kept as a kind of Tamagotchi and then imported back into the game.
I wish you a lot of fun, even if the charm of back then is no longer comprehensible today.
Oh, okay, I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun anyway π
Sega Mega Drive. I grew up with itβ¦
My first game on it was Sonic 2 and I loved it.
Best console back then unfortunately nobody wanted it!
Yes, what a shame! Who knows otherwise Sega might still be on the console market today π―
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is really cool π
Sega will definitely bring another console, the question is whether tomorrow or in 20 years!
There were some funny bugs, especially when a second player was controlling Tails.
I've also heard that Sony wants to get out of the console market after the Playstation 5. Maybe Sega will give it another try π
