How many external controllers are connected to the switch?

I'm thinking of getting a Nintendo Switch.

My question in advance, how many external (e.g. X-Box) controllers can I connect simultaneously via one or more adapters? Does anyone have experience with this?

Background: I would like to play with several people, e.g. Mario Kart, but I don't want to buy 3-4 Switch Pro controllers or Joy Pads because I already have several other controllers.
