Why does the PS5 no longer have an optical output? Isn't it a step backwards to use HDMI again?

TOS-Link can only transmit uncompressed stereo. More than 2 channels can only be compressed in the form of Dolby Surround or DTS.
HDMI can now transmit up to 32 channels of uncompressed audio at up to 196kHz.
There's no need to go backwards to HDMI.
