I'm considering buying red dead redemption 2 for the ps4 (it's currently on sale). However, I never played the first part and it is not available for the ps4. Is the first part necessary to understand the story of part 2?
No. 'Red Dead Redemption 2' takes place before the first part.
It's just a shame you can't play r d r 1 on PS4 because it's a very intense story about John Marston.
No you don't have to. RDR1 plays before RDR2. If you should rather play RDR1 after that😂. But definitely get RDR2 it has the BEST story I know and an extremely good atmosphere and you can invest hundreds of hours in the game if you really want to see everything (almost impossible with so many secrets)

No is not necessary. I have already played through the story of RDR2 2 times but never played RDR1… You understand everything and as far as I know it is chronologically the other way round anyway, so that from the story you would have to play the 2nd part first and then the 1st part
