Fortnite is actually free. Ps 4 downloaded with no problems. Why do I have to buy or subscribe to play this on Xbox? Is there really no other way?

Yes, you would need Xbox Live for that. There's currently no other way. But patience would be good because it was announced that it will be changed in the future. When exactly this will happen is still unclear.
