What if I want to be a member of xbox Gold for a month but no longer, so I can just pay the month and then it's gone automatically. Or do I have to cancel it properly?

You have to unsubscribe from the Microsoft website because that is what it is.

But this is super easy and possible immediately after completing the subscription with the 1 month for one euro.
