When the xbox one appeared, the consoles were sold at Gamestop and Media Markt in a shopping center at midnight on the day of publication. I was there towards evening the day before. I didn't pre-order or anything and was surprised that nobody was waiting. Through a conversation with the seller at Gamestop, I learned that the consoles at midnight are only given to those who have pre-ordered. I went straight to Mediamarkt and was able to reserve the last console for myself.
I got it at midnight.
It's best to pre-order them. The shops may run out of business for the first few weeks 😉
