Playstation PS4 via mobile phone hotspot with Wi-Fi from the router?

I locked my son's Playstation in the router for educational purposes. Now we have found that he still plays online, via the hotspot of his cell phone, at least that's what he says.

My question about this: Is it possible to use the Wi-Fi data of the cell phone (cell phone connected to router) to play on the Playstation? As far as I know, the classic hotspot on the cell phone only works with mobile data. Which trick does he use? His mobile phone is also locked in the router from midnight and he says that after midnight he can no longer play. So he seems to be definitely using Wi-Fi on his cell phone for the PS4.

Can I connect the Playstation via the Playstation app of the mobile phone?

Or is he using a separate app that shares the cellphone's Wi-Fi as Wi-Fi?

A hotspot on the cell phone works via mobile data and not via the WLAN. As long as he has a contract that also includes the Internet, it is possible for him to get into the Internet and make a hotspot for the PS4

Hi, with some devices you can enable the Wi-Fi via hotspot (but I'm not sure whether it works in general or only partially or only with devices with custom rom / jailbreak / root, at least that was once possible with an old device from me ). Otherwise you can also share data by cable, i.e. That he connects his cell phone via Wi-Fi and then connects the smartphone to a PC or similar via data cable and then creates a "hotspot" via data cable, but whether that works with the Playstation, there I'm not sure.

As I said, his cell phone is locked in the router from midnight, then he can no longer play online with the PS4, so he uses the cell phone's Wi-Fi data (from the router). That's why I ask:-) That a "normal" cell phone hotspot only works with mobile data, I know, so I also wrote in the question:-) But thank you anyway

The phone wasn't connected to the PS4 … So no USB tethering.

I still found this…

You can connect the PS4 to the cell phone… But I don't know whether the PS4 can then also use the data from the cell phone to play.

The hotspot in the smartphone can usually only be operated via mobile data, as the Wi-Fi modem can either open a network (hotspot) or log into a network. Some manufacturers may offer both. The latency will be higher either way, making online games less fun.

Maybe he found another way. Via the FritzBox (with other routers it could be different) you only interrupted the internet connection. The devices can continue to communicate freely in the network. With a local VPN server you should be able to bypass this limitation. All traffic goes through the VPN server.

USB tethering, which was mentioned, should probably not be supported by the PlayStation. Here the cell phone would be a WLAN stick for the PlayStation.

A USB LAN or WLAN adapter should not be used by the PlayStation either. The PlayStation would have a new Mac address and would be a new device for the FritzBox, which gets the default settings.

You should look for all known devices in the router interface. Is there a new device there?

If your son continues to play at unauthorized times, you could prematurely block his cell phone's internet connection. Based on his reaction, you should be able to determine whether the Internet is coming from the cell phone via the Wi-Fi.

There are no new devices in the router… There was a new one, a cell phone, which must have belonged to a friend of my son's, but it wasn't online when he was playing online with the PS4. With his statement that he can no longer play at midnight, it means that he definitely uses his cell phone to play on the PS4 because his cell phone is locked in the router from midnight.

Yes, I can lock his cell phone at any time, my main concern is to understand what he is doing.

So is it technically possible to use an app on the cell phone to generate a "new" WLAN to which he has connected the PS4?

Va

But there's no point in blocking your mobile phone on the router from 0 if you can also access the Internet with your mobile data. These are 2 different things

De

Yes, I know what you mean, but with 1.5 GB he doesn't get very far, I would let him "screw it up", then he can only use WhatsApp for the rest of the month with throttled data… He only does that once:-)

Va

And I don't think either that he managed to change the configurations on the router so that it is no longer blocked, right?

Li

No, that has nothing to do with it. The second screen app only allows you to display additional SP4 content on the mobile phone, to use the mobile phone as a touchpad, keyboard or for messages, i.e. Like a second monitor on the PC.
