Ps4 new hard drive?

My hard drive is broken and I want to buy a new one now. If I now expand the internal but only connect an external one, would the ps4 still work or do I also need an internal one? And if I have to buy an internal one, do I have to buy the originals? And do you have good internal and external hard drives that you can recommend?

Simplest solution leave internal in and buy external.

I exchanged my internal one for a 1.5 terabyte hard drive.

But I didn't make a backup (apart from savegames in the cloud) because the repeated downloading of the games is faster than the backup.
