Which headsets work on the Xbox One S?

I made the following discovery and don't quite understand why it works.

I have an Xbox one S in conjunction with an Elite Controller. For online gaming I bought a Razer Nari headset and found that it didn't work. (by googling I already found out that I need an adapter for the controller)

But since I wanted to play online with friends yesterday, I connected a beats in ear headset, which also worked with the Xbox (why? What is different about it than a large headset?!)

Just now, out of boredom, I looked for all the headphones and headsets that I still had around at home and found the following:

The razer nari of course still doesn't work

The bears in ear headset still works

Then I tried the Beats mixr (normal headphones) which didn't work… (and why don't normal headphones work?!)

And last but not least, I dug up my old Turtle Beach heroes of the storm headset. This has a broken cable and only works sporadically, but if it worked, did it work with the xbox?! Sound as well as micro? WITHOUT ADAPTER or similar

HOW SO?!

Can someone please explain to me why some headphones or headsets work and some don't?!

I only use in-ear headsets on the Xbox because only a few of the on-ear headsets work. Why? I don't know and understand. But a good in ear is enough in my opinion.

You will probably need an adapter, but if you pay attention to which type the next time you buy, as described above in the article, I think you won't need one.
