Are Beyerdynamic headphones for PS4 / PS5 worthwhile?

No

I previously had a Lioncast LX 50 headset for the PS4. Since I want to buy a PS5 soon, I want to buy a new, better headset (up to 150 euro). I don't really know my way around there, but in this price segment I had already put headsets from the following brands on the shortlist: HyperX, Arctis Steelseries, Razer and Astro

But when I did a little more research, there were occasional reports from people who said that all these "GAMING" headsets are overpriced and that they are just normal headsets like any other. Headsets from Beyerdynamic were often recommended in the price category, which should be much better than the "GAMING" headsets. How is that true?

I took a look at the Beyerdynamic headsets (dt770 Pro 32 OHM, 115 euro Amazon; dt880 Pro 32 OHM, approx. 150 euro Amazon) and they are in my budget. If my first question can be answered with yes, I ask myself whether it is worthwhile for the PS4 / PS5 where you usually just plug the headphones into the controller? I had known such "real" studio headphones before, but I thought that without a proper sound card and amplifier, supplied with power from the controller, they wouldn't do much more than the gaming headsets.

So I have a Gaminig headset from Razer (Kraken 7.1 V2) and I'm not satisfied with it. It doesn't sound good for the 80 euro I paid ~ 3 years ago and I would like to buy new headphones soon. So I can advise you against all the fancy glowing gaming headsets.

If you buy studio / hi-fi headphones for your controller, you have to be careful: with the beyerdynamic dt770 / 880/990 series, I would definitely not use a version over 80ohm. I don't know how good the ps4 controller sound card is but the dt990 250ohm on my Galaxy S9 plus were quiet and sounded "mushy". I guess that the 80 ohm and definitely the 32 ohm variant would work well with your controller. You can also connect a headphone amp and / or an external DAC to your console via Toslink, but believe that this is no longer in your budget and quite unnecessary for gaming. Another important thing: The resistance (the ohm number) is not everything. It is also dependent on the degree of effectiveness, etc., which are different from headphone model to headphone model, google das einf (just on the edge if you do not decide on a beyers).

Now to the question of whether it is worthwhile with the PS4 sound card: Would it just try it out in your place. So far I also connected the dt990 to my surface and laptop, whereby the laptop (Lenovo Y700) sounded almost exactly like my Soundblaster z and the surface (Surface Pro 7) more like a cell phone (but as I said, the 250ohm version was). You can just order and see if it works well enough or not (but in my experience that should be ok).

Which headphones would I recommend to you? So of the dt series, I liked the dt990 best by far (think it is exactly the right mix of neutral, clear sound and slightly more pleasant "sound coloration"). The 770 wasn't at all my case found it too little neutral and the closed design make it sound more "depressed" in my opinion. The 880 is better, but I find it almost too neutral, too clear and too little "lively". Otherwise, I can recommend the AKG k702 (but I don't think your ps4 can handle it) or the Sennheiser Hd599 (I don't know how well it works with the PS4). Otherwise, I recommend you just go to an eon music store (e.g. Just Music) and listen to all the headphones and see which one you think sounds best (you can use your cell phone sound card as a testps4 controller card).

You just won't have a microphone with studio headphones (hope you realize that).

Firstly, thank you for your answer. The choice will be between DT880,990 and TYGR 300 R. I was expecting to have to buy an amplifier or something or something like the BlasterX G6 from Creative. It would be a shame not to exhaust such headphones if you already buy them… Operating them on the jack connection of the PS4 / PS5 will certainly be loud enough for me, but what about the sound quality. I keep reading something like: "If it's loud enough for you, you don't need an amplifier and / or DAC". Somehow I vaguely doubt that. It may well be that the 32 ohm versions are loud enough on the Dualshock / Dualsense, but I doubt that the headphones are being used to the full. Somehow it feels like a Ferrari that has 500 hp, but you only have 150 hp available…

What do you think about that?

One more aspect you shouldn't forget: both dt you suggested are open headphones (I don't know the type, so I can't say anything). The open design is great for the sound, because resonance within the headphones is avoided (if I understand that correctly ^^). The disadvantage is: everyone around you hears what you hear and you hear everything from the outside. If the ps4 is right next to you, I would think about using the open headphones because they get pretty loud… Alternatives would be the dt770 or ath m50x (which even looks cool, I think).

As far as a DAC / AMP is concerned: So if you want to buy one then it is best to use the 250ohm version of the beyers (dt990 or 880) because otherwise it is really unnecessary. But if you would only use 32 or 80 ohms, I think you shouldn't hear a difference. I once connected my dt990 250ohm to an RME BABYFACE PRO (700 euro audio interface from a friend) with the built-in sound card of the lenovo y700 and I was shocked that there was almost no difference (it could be because of the spotify bit rate lag). I would try the ps4 myself at your place and if that doesn't suit you, you can always get a headphone amp. I think an amp is not a must have in the price range.

But if you still want to get one, I would recommend you not to buy a pure headphone amplifier, but a dac with a headphone amplifier, so you will most likely hear a difference. You just have to think about something you can't connect to the controller, it would have to be connected to the console itself via optical (Toslink) (not sure if the ps5 can do that, but I hope so). But as I said, I think that's a bit over the top for gaming. I think you'd have more of it to buy wireless headphones (would be more important to me personally for gaming than HiFi sound; unless you plan to use them to listen to music).

In general, I would recommend the headphones that are suitable for you to music lovers and producers, but if good sound is important to you when gaming, then nothing speaks against it. To be honest, I think N amplifiers are exaggerated, especially if you choose 32 or 80 ohm beyers (the Dacs / Amps don't cost little either).

No

So if I really need AMP / DAC, I had to go this way.

PS5 → HDMI → TV → (via Toslink) DAC / AMP device → headphones

Is there anything against it?
