Xbox live account for free (not the gold version)?

Following thing. I've bought myself at Steam Battlestation: Pacific. I intaliert the game and then I wanted to create an account on Windows Live (as it was then called) today it's Xbox live. The registration was easy, just enter a few dates as always and now the problem. I've read (just so researched) that the subscription costs money.

QUESTION: Did I now subscribe to this application and have to pay for it? I thank you for letting it.

No, Windows Live did not cost money 10 years ago. You could use the games quite normally. A nice side effect was that you could unlock Achievements for your Xbox account. It would be interesting if that still works

The Achievments system also seems to work. At least I get such messages while playing.
