I would like to have a new Nintendo Switch game. I've heard a lot of good things about Zelda games and thought to myself, why not? Now to my question, is it worth buying Breath of the Wild? I've never had a Zelda game so I'm very perplexed and don't know if I need the old games to understand the story.

And yes, it's 100% worth it. As long as you do a lot of research and loot a lot before going to Ganon, it's so much fun. I myself would give a lot to be able to forget everything and play again.

Zelda: BotW is a very good game, but you have to bring some time with you. You don't necessarily have to have played one of the predecessors. But they are all good!

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild was also my first Zelda game and it was worth it!
You don't need to have played the previous games, but once you've done it it's a little easier.
Every Zelda game from Breath of the Wild has a different storyline so you don't have to worry about it!
My recommendation would be to maybe watch the first couple of episodes of Breath of the Wild by Youtubern (Domtendo) to get into the Zelda Game!
