Is it legitimate that Telekom provides routers that are so bad that there are massive disconnections?

Since I have a new DSL contract with Telekom, which among other things. Having made the Speedport W 925V available, I have massive internet problems with all programs. Be it on the Ps4 / Ps5 in voice chat, in programs such as Vitero, MS Teams, Zoom etc. There are always short connection interruptions and sometimes makes it unusable… After various router settings, port openings etc. I could neither fix the problem nor influence. Strangely enough, the online support also advised me to get a new router without testing anything else… Of course, made an offer that would have cost me over 200 euro for a Fritzbox 9xxx, which you can get in free trade for 180 euro ~ . Is it actually really legitimate for Telekom to sell me a contract with a router that sometimes hinders use? Do you have no right to a router that "delivers" the Internet that you book correctly, or does the private person have to buy an expensive router? And how long does such a router last? I still have a Fritzbox from the 2010s. I guess this is too out of date these days?

VG and thanks for every answer

Do you have any proof that your router is the cause? Or is the paid service too little for your application or is the line overloaded?

Vo

I can say less about the "legal situation". The fact is, in my experience, speed ports are really unreliable devices. I simply recommend buying a router for yourself privately so that you can do without Telekom loan devices and routers. A proper router doesn't cost 200 euro either, almost anyone can set it up. It is possible to "fritz" Telekom routers. The background is that both fritzbox routers and telecom routers usually have an AVM chipset installed. With Fritz software you usually have a more stable system in addition to more features. With a loaner I wouldn't tinker with the firmware.

Not enough characters, I'll write it to you as a supplement.

If that should really be because of the speed haven, which I don't believe, the Telekom will exchange the guaranteed for you. After all, you pay rent for it. For years, Telekom's Speedport has been working for me without any problems…

nu

You can also edit / add to the question.

Vi

Why do you think it's not the router? I was able to rule out all problem factors. And I'm not that incapable of IT either…

Usually, you actually get a router that matches the data speed of the contract. Perhaps concluded an unsuitable contract for your user habits?

In addition, you can of course have the misfortune of living in a region where the line network has not yet been expanded and therefore the ordered speed can't be achieved. But then you have the right / possibility to change the contract.

Sometimes it is also due to the server at the other end of the line. Because of the circumstances, many access it at the same time. E.g. Learning platforms in homeschooling that work flawlessly in almost no federal state.

Vi

Thanks, then I'll find out about better routers, do you have a personal recommendation?

Vi

Jo done.

To the initial situation:

Nobody forced you to rent a telecom router with the connection. OK, that sounds harsh at first, but it is not meant badly but purely factual. You could have done without it from the outset and could have bought your own router instead.

Apart from that, about the Telkom routers in general:

I don't know exactly what your model looks like, but I know that there are also Telekom routers that are simply a "re-labeled Fritzbox" with their own user interface and in a Telekom housing. And they have been running perfectly with people I have known for years.

It's always like this: You can either buy something yourself that you know is "good for something". Or you can find out beforehand what to expect from the network provider's relabeled product. And that before you sign the contract including the rental router.

Vi

Speed fits. I live in Frankfurt, it shouldn't be due to the lines in my street. And that is true with the server of the learning platform, some crashes certainly came from them, but this problem occurs so often and in so many different programs that I can very probably rule it out.

Vo

You never do anything wrong with a Fritzbox. I don't know the required tariff dataset, so you could then make a more detailed selection. But if "normal" and rather easy to handle home office is not possible, that is something more serious. You should also see that it is really the router, test different methods such as Wi-Fi or Lan alternately. Telekom usually knows about it. Not everyone has problems, but it can't be denied that telecom routers are really in the lower class.

Vi

Since I don't have that much life experience yet, it was always the case with me that I used the router supplied, always without any problems. Since my router from my old contract was getting on in years, I had no concerns about replacing it with a newer device from Telekom. I just thought that a newer device could not be a downgrade… I also didn't have to pay any extra rent for the router, or I just overlooked it in the contract… Because until now I never had to send the router back or pay a sum for it at the beginning of the contract, that's why all of this currently confuses me a bit.

Vi

Wlan, Lan all tested, no difference. If I buy a new router and everything works, I can give you feedback here.

Vo

All right, very happy ^^
You can also order or buy another router for testing purposes.

nu

Ah ok.

Yes, I understand the situation is stupid for you. It's no fun like that. Honestly, I would call Telekom again and ask how much less you have to pay if you send them back the "rental router". Maybe you can save a euro or two a month if they join in.

And then you just get one of the current Fritz boxes. It costs around 100 euro (doesn't have to be the "luxury model"), but experience shows that they work properly.

Vi

Yes, that's exactly what I think I will do. The prices scared me off at first (200 euro ~), because I've never (had to) buy a router, but some people say that you can get something useful for a little cheaper.

Vi

All right, thank you very much, I'll do that. That I only "rent" the thing, I have still not been able to find out from my documents (it doesn't say anywhere that I have to return it), but apparently it has to be like that, read it everywhere above

Vo

In any case, you should find something for less than 100 euro…

nu

Maybe you can get away with it if you simply claim that.

If it was a "free addition" then it probably won't work.

But then it's hard to complain about the quality anyway. Perhaps one of these "router inclusive" offers, in which they then install the cheapest possible hardware in the router so that their "generosity" does not cost so much.

I have already experienced this with other providers with "routers given free of charge". After a while of constant crashes and problems (with a friend) I exchanged the router for a Fritzbox for him and since then he has no longer had any problems.

Vi

Well, I'll have a good look again and then they will definitely get to hear something again… The support from those online was really under the bang, they couldn't even form whole sentences. But another topic…

So the Telekom Speedport W925v and the FritzBox 7590 are equal in terms of technical data!

It must be something else. Only test with a LAN connection.
Maybe set fixed, if possible free, WLAN channels. And try to work with different SSIDs (WLAN names) for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Because it could be that your WLAN devices can't handle band steering (with your old router you probably had no ac WLAN 5 GHz at all), or switch off 5 GHz WLAN completely for a test, then it will be the same as before.

Here is the comparison of both contemporary routers:
