Xbox doesn't recognize headset?

When I connect my headset to my controller, I don't get any sound and the microphone doesn't work. If I go to where you can adjust how loud everything is (Xbox button and then bottom right) He shows everything transparently and can't adjust it. It's as if no headphones / headset were connected at all. I tried it with a pair of headphones and a headset. Also with 2 controllers.
