XBox 360 wireless controller is not recognized as a game controller?

A friend recently gave me an "XBox 360 Wireless Controller via Play & Charge Kit" because it does not work properly. I have tried almost everything to get this going. The controller is indeed recognized by my computer but not as a game controller in the associated game controller window "Win-key + R ---> joy.cpl" displayed.
