I would like to buy an xbox series s now I'm not sure whether I need hdmi 2.0 or 2.1 for 1440p and 120 fps? As an an example. If I would buy a monitor with hdmi 2.0 connection, 2560 x 1440p and 144hz, the xbox series would run at 120 fps and 1440p with hdmi 2.0 or not?

You need 2.1

have the same problem at the moment. 2.1 televisions are cheap and 2.1 monitors are very rare

Theoretically possible yes, but the new consoles require 2.1 to output in 1440p and 4K with 120Hz. This means that the 1440p 120Hz option is simply deactivated on a monitor.

El

In theory, but it doesn't have to be.

It is best to use HDMI 2.1 directly because it supports 100%
