There are several questions!
The cable is a normal micro USB cable. It should be 2m then you can continue playing with cable.
In order to charge batteries, however, you first need a battery pack because as you have noticed, the controller only comes with batteries.
Depending on usage, these last about a week, possibly longer.
I recommend the original Play and Charge Pack from Microsoft. The battery lasts a long time and is very durable. There's also a cable for charging. In the meantime you can comfortably continue playing.
