Why do I need Xbox live?

I used to have an old xbox360 before 6 years ago where you could download for free etc, now I have a newer Xbox 360 and wanted to download a demo again and they just wanted me to buy it live, my friends did not even play a car online is and they also need live

Why should I pay for it, I mean I have the game soon and I have to pay live despite the fact that it is such an old game and can't even play live?
