XBox controller not working?

I can turn on my xbox controller but it won't connect to the xbox

Then you have to press the button on the front and hold it on the controller until the xbox button flashes and then press and hold a button on the front of the xbox at the bottom right (at least this is possible with the xbox one s, net knows which console you have)
