I have an Xbox one and an external hard drive because it clacks the whole time I unplugged it, assuming the hard drive is broken, are the memory on the hard drive gone or are they stored in the cloud, regardless of whether I use an external drive

When you are online with your console, your game saves are saved in the cloud.
